Critical Thinking Club, Location: Date: March 4 Time: 10:00 a.m. to Noon Presenter: Sarah Kogut Topic: “Clinical Trials Demystified” |
|
This
talk will describe clinical trials conducted by pharmaceutical and medical
device companies, for submission to the FDA. FDA approval is based on
demonstration of efficacy and safety of the drug or medical device, using the
clinical trial data.
Larger
and longer duration clinical trials provide better evidence of efficacy and
safety. However, this creates higher cost and delays availability. Meanwhile,
the urgency of the patient who may have few or no other options creates demand
for an accelerated approval process.
Several
programs offered by FDA attempt to address these diverse needs of public safety
while providing timely access to new treatments. These programs include:
accelerated approval, conditional approval, orphan drug category, and off label
prescriptions.
Critical
thinking techniques will be used to discuss tradeoffs inherent in these
programs.
Sarah Kogut is a
pharmaceutical research professional.

Topic: “Voter Photo ID:
Fraud Catcher or Vote Snatcher?”
Next
November, Minnesotans will decide 1) if voter fraud is a problem worthy of the
cost of implementation, 2) if the proposed law will actually stop the alleged
voter fraud and 3) whether voting is an earned privilege such as the use of a
credit card or a necessary right for every citizen if we are to live in a
democracy. Our Stillwater/Lake Elmo Mn House Representative Kathy Lohmer
co-sponsored the Voter ID legislation.
The proposed law is not without controversy. A June 12, 2011 USA Today editorial
highlighted the proposed Republican Voter ID law concluding that it
"smacks of voter suppression."
